Many people don’t realize that they grew up with a narcissistic father. They don’t know what is wrong with their lives. They don’t realize that they have continued to fill their lives with other narcissists, and this is why, no matter how hard they try, their relationships aren’t working. It’s because they haven’t known what they’re dealing with.
In families, where there is a narcissistic father, things sometimes seem rather normal. But…upon closer examination, there are certain “rules”. He is right and apologizes for nothing. There is no understanding that children go through developmental stages and need help to grow into healthy adults; therefore, he doesn’t spend time teaching his children how to do things and then he is shocked when his child makes a mistake. The child wonders, “How could I have not known that?” and vows to never be found inadequate again. He cannot tolerate his child’s emotional need of him and views his child’s longings for attachment as excessively needy and will label his child’s feelings as dramatic.
